Jamen, courtesy notices have been introduced just recently in our consortium, in fact we "advertise" it as an extra service to persuade patrons to give us their e-mail addresses. We wanted to get patron e-mails for two reasons: first to reduce the number of paper notices that were sent by mail and second to reduce the number of people that we had to call to notify them that their holds were available. We find that most people whom we ask who have e-mail are more than willing to give it and it is the courtesy notice that seals the deal. We tell them up front that all of their notices will come via e-mail and no one has said no yet.

Thanks for sharing this, Corey! We would like to enable courtesy
notices, but we want to allow patrons to opt-in for this service and as
far as I know, that is not an option - it's either all on or all off.
It would be an interesting study, though.

The Queens Library system often flexes its muscles in collecting overdue
books and late fees.

Much of the article revolves around Unique Management - a collection
agency that partners with many Innovative customers. Just some nice
food for thought.

The funny thing is that now that more and more libraries offer courtesy
notices, I wonder if the amounts collected will go down. That would be
interesting for libraries that have these notices implemented to see if
it has had an impact on dues collected.
