What are in the Excel file? Are there some matching fields such as title, isn numbers, oclc # or the like? And better yet, barcodes?

If your library has the inventory module, you might be able to read a list of barcode into review file, what you need to do is to extract and list the barcodes from the Excel file in the format the inventory system requires. See previous posting:

http://innovativeusers.org/list/archives/2007/msg02714.html

Otherwise, if you had loader training, you can do the following:

1. Extract a delimited list from your Excel file to include only the field you use to match, ex. oclc#, it has to be unique.
2. Use the delimited text translator of MarcEdit (thanks to Terry Reese) to map the oclc# into 001 filed and compile it into a Marc file.
3. Use MarcEdit to add a 9xx field that says something like "FOR_DELETION".
4. Configure your loader to match on the 001 field and load the records with 9xx fields being "FOR_DELETION".
5. Run a review file to collect those records that have 9xx as "FOR_DELETION" and delete them.

To avoid accidentally deleting good records, you need to make sure the matching point is unique and your MARC file doesn't overlay any other records you don't want to delete.

I have the same problem -- I suspect there are many of us trying to avoid deleting these records one at a time -
Please share you response to this query online -
