How does your library divide cataloging tasks between MLS and non-MLS catalogers?

We think this is an important question as the cataloging landscape continues to evolve. Please join us at ALA Mid-Winter as we think together about various approaches:

ALCTS DG: The Role of the Professional Librarian in Technical Services
Topic: Appropriate Roles for MLS and Non-MLS Catalogers
Date: Sunday, January 13, 2008
Time: 4-6 PM
Location: Pennsylvania Convention Center - Room 308
Moderator and Chair: Ruth Fischer, Partner, R2 Consulting LLC

Mary McKeown (Cataloging Librarian at Notre Dame University) will kick-off the session with a 15 minute presentation about how she and her staff at Notre Dame University have developed a formal MLS/non-MLS partnership approach. A moderated discussion will follow which we expect to include topics related to MARC and non-MARC metadata creation.

If you will be unable to attend, we would love to hear your thoughts and experiences ahead of time. Please reply for the list or send them directly to Michael Rice (mikerice at bus dot umich dot edu), who will share your input with us at Mid-Winter!

Happy Holidays!

Mike
