Librarian,    Salt Lake City Public Library, Sprague Branch

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Provides library services at the reference desk, including assistance in location and use of materials, reference, electronic resources and readers' guidance. Collection development responsibilities and programming may be included.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:  Broad knowledge of the concepts and vocabulary of the liberal arts; knowledge of children’s and young adult literature and expertise in the selection of materials and provision of reader’s advisory for children, young adults and adults; ability to use catalogs, indexes and tools; ability to use computers; enthusiasm for the provision of quality public service; enthusiasm for working with diverse communities, excellent human relations skills; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to exercise mature independent judgment; ability to lift and handle library materials up to 20 pounds; ability to communicate effectively in English orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with others, including the general public; capable of handling multiple demands and stressful situations. Additional language skills desired.

QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of a Master's Degree in Library Science and previous children’s services library experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. The incumbent should demonstrate a broader and more specialized expertise in material selection, collection development, utilization of reference and bibliographic tools, knowledge of the principles and practices of library science, and the ability to provide training to staff and patrons.

SCHEDULE: 40 hours, will include evenings, Saturdays and one Sunday per month.

COMPENSATION:  $2,687 monthly. Competitive benefits include paid retirement, paid medical, dental and life insurance; 22 days vacation, 3 days personal leave, nine paid holidays.

This position may also be filled at the Associate Librarian level.
