- Subject: Re: Spine labels and laser printers
There has been some mention on the list that the ink from dot matrix printers actually lasts longer than the ink from laser printers. Some libraries have reported a need to replace faded call number labels (produced using a laser printer) after a few years. If anyone has had long-term success with labels produced on laser printers, would you respond to the list?

Marla,
This is one of the last frontiers of printing from Innopac. I do NOT believe
there is a way to do it on a "system" printer. If you want to do it on an
"attached" printer, that is, attached to your PC, it matters greatly what
terminal program (telnet) you have.
The following description assumes you are using AnzioWin for your telnet.
Effective with AnzioWin version 12.2, you can have a "print init" file on the
PC, that will be processed ahead of each passthrough print job. In it, you can
(using a derivative of HTML) specify the top margin, left margin, linespacing,
and especially BOTTOM margin of the page, so that you will get the correct
number of lines per label and lines per page. We do not yet have a way to
specify two-across labels (down one column, then down the other column); we're
working on it. In the meantime, you might print the left column of labels,
then turn the paper 180 degrees and feed it through again to print the other
ones.
All that being said, many libraries find it convenient to keep a dot matrix
printer dedicated to spine labels, with continuous stock.
